The rule we use on this site is simple: allow your realistic drive time, add 30 minutes of Phuket traffic margin, then add three hours at the airport for an international flight or two hours for a domestic one. From Patong that works out to about 4 hours 30 minutes before an international departure. From Kata, Karon or Rawai it is closer to 4 hours 45 minutes. From Nai Yang or Mai Khao, right next to the runway, 3 hours 30 minutes is enough.
Almost every Phuket transfer guide, including our own route pages, is written for the arrival direction — you land, you get to your beach. The departure day is the one that actually goes wrong, because the airport sits at the far north of the island and most visitors stay in the south. Below is the leave-by table we could never find anywhere else, built from the same distances and drive times we publish on each route page.
How early to leave for Phuket Airport, beach by beach
Drive times are for a car — taxi, Grab or private transfer — in normal daytime traffic. The two right-hand columns are how long before your scheduled departure you should be pulling out of your hotel driveway, traffic margin already included.

If your flight leaves in the evening rush, or you are travelling on a Thai public holiday, add another 30 minutes on the west-coast beaches. The single-lane stretch over the hill out of Patong and the coastal road through Kamala are where Phuket transfers lose their time.
A worked example: a 09:00 flight from Kata
Take a common case — an early morning international departure while you are staying in Kata. Four hours 45 minutes before 09:00 puts your pick-up at 04:15. That single number decides everything else about your departure day:
- The Phuket Smart Bus is not running yet, so the 100-baht option is off the table.
- Shared minivans do not do 04:15 pick-ups either; they run on daytime schedules.
- You are booking a taxi or a private transfer the night before, or you are relying on a Grab driver answering at 4 a.m. in the south of the island — which is a gamble.
- Your hotel breakfast will not be open. Ask for a boxed one at check-out or plan to eat airside.

Why the trip back is not a mirror image of your arrival
Three things change on the departure leg, and all three catch people out.
The 100-baht airport surcharge disappears. A metered taxi picked up at HKT charges the meter plus a mandatory ฿100 airport surcharge, as we explain on our airport taxi page. Going the other way you are not picked up at the airport, so that fee should not appear. If a driver quotes it on the way to the airport, it is not an official charge.
Meters get switched off. At the airport there is a regulated taxi desk. At a beach you are negotiating with whoever is parked outside, and many will refuse the meter and quote a flat price instead. Either agree the number before you get in, use Grab, Bolt or inDrive so the fare is fixed on screen before you set off, or ask your hotel to arrange the car the previous evening — usually the least stressful of the three.
The AOT limousine desk is an arrivals product. Those fixed ฿800–1,200 fares are quoted at a counter inside the terminal, so they are not an option for getting to the airport. Your equivalent on the way out is a pre-booked private transfer at a fixed price, or a metered taxi without the surcharge.
Can you use the Smart Bus to reach the airport?
Yes, in daylight. The Phuket Smart Bus (its airport line, Route 1) runs in both directions between Rawai and the airport along the west coast for the same ฿100 flat fare, calling at Kata, Karon, Patong, Kamala, Surin, Bang Tao and Nai Yang. For a midday or afternoon flight from a west-coast beach it is genuinely the cheapest way to the terminal.
Two cautions. Published northbound times vary between sources, and the operator's own timetable notes that times are approximate and traffic-dependent — check the live bus tracker on the day rather than trusting any schedule you read online, including this one. And the journey is slow: Patong to the airport by bus is roughly 90 minutes against 45–60 by car, so a bus departure means leaving your hotel about an hour earlier than the table above. For an early morning flight it does not work at all.
Which beaches are safe for an early flight
If you know in advance that your flight home leaves before about 08:00, the north of the island is worth considering for your last night. Nai Yang is about 4 km from the terminal and Mai Khao runs right alongside it — a 10 to 15 minute drive and a 3 h 30 min lead time even for a long-haul departure. Moving your last two nights north turns a 04:15 alarm in Kata into a 05:30 one, and takes the whole traffic question off the table.
Coming from the mainland the arithmetic is harsher. Khao Lak needs a five-hour lead for an international flight, and Krabi needs seven and a half — which for most early departures means travelling to Phuket the day before rather than at dawn.
How much of that time you actually spend inside the terminal
HKT runs an International Terminal and a Domestic Terminal side by side, linked by a covered walkway — the layout is described on our Phuket Airport hub page. Airlines here typically open check-in around three hours before departure and close it 45 to 60 minutes before, and some carriers close earlier than that on domestic services, so the closing time on your booking is the number that matters, not the airport's opening hours. Check which terminal you need before you set off: if a driver drops you at the wrong one, the two buildings are next to each other and the covered walkway between them is a short walk, not a taxi ride — but it is time you would rather not spend.
The three-hour international allowance is not padding. Peak departure banks at Phuket queue at bag drop, security and immigration at the same time, and there is no fast way through if you arrive inside the last hour. Confirm your terminal and your actual departure time on our live flight board before you leave the hotel — a delayed inbound aircraft is the one thing that can legitimately buy you an extra hour in the pool.
How early should I leave Patong for a flight from Phuket Airport?
Leave Patong about 4 hours 30 minutes before an international departure and 3 hours 30 minutes before a domestic one. That covers a 45–60 minute drive over the hill, a 30-minute traffic margin, and the time you need inside the terminal. Add another half hour if you are leaving during the evening rush.
How far is Phuket Airport from the beaches?
Phuket International Airport is at the northern tip of the island, so the closest beaches are minutes away. Nai Yang is about 4 km from the terminal and Mai Khao runs alongside the airport itself — its nearest section is barely 2 km away, though most Mai Khao resorts sit 8 km or so up the coast. After that: Bang Tao 21 km, Surin 23 km, Kamala 28 km, Phuket Town 32 km, Patong 35 km, Karon 42 km, Kata 45 km and Rawai 48 km. On the mainland, Khao Lak is around 80 km and Krabi about 165 km.
Can I take the Smart Bus to Phuket Airport for my departure?
Yes, for daytime flights. Route 1 runs northbound from Rawai to the airport along the west coast for a ฿100 flat fare, but it is slow — around 90 minutes from Patong — and it does not run early enough for a morning departure. Check the operator's live tracker on the day, because published times vary.
Do I pay the ฿100 airport surcharge on the way to the airport?
No. The ฿100 surcharge applies to metered taxis picked up at Phuket Airport. On the outbound leg from your hotel you should pay the meter or an agreed flat fare only. AOT limousine fares are quoted at a desk inside the terminal, so they apply to arrivals only.
How long does it take to get from Khao Lak to Phuket Airport?
Khao Lak is about 80 km north of the airport across the Sarasin Bridge, and the drive takes 75–90 minutes in normal traffic. Allow a five-hour lead time for an international flight. There is no Smart Bus on this route, so it is a taxi, a shared minivan or a private transfer.
