How to read the Phuket arrivals board

Each arrival shows a scheduled time and, once the aircraft is airborne, an estimated one. The estimate is the number that matters — it moves as the flight progresses, and on the Bangkok shuttle it can shift by 20 minutes either way without anything being wrong. A status of "landed" means wheels on the runway, not a passenger in the hall.

That gap catches out anyone meeting a flight. After landing, passengers still have to taxi to a stand, walk the terminal, clear immigration and wait for bags. Allow 20 to 40 minutes after "landed" before someone appears at the arrivals exit, and longer if several international flights arrived in the same window. If you have pre-booked a transfer, a driver who tracks the flight absorbs this automatically; a taxi booked for a fixed clock time does not.

If a flight vanishes from the arrivals list, it has usually just aged off the board rather than been cancelled — boards show a rolling window of a few hours. Check the airline's own status page for anything outside that window.

Departures: what the board tells you and what it does not

The time against a departure is the scheduled push-back, not your boarding time and certainly not your check-in deadline. Work backwards from it: check-in at HKT typically closes 45 to 60 minutes before departure, and some carriers close earlier on domestic services, so the number printed on your booking overrides anything here.

Gate numbers at Phuket tend to appear late — often only once boarding is close. Do not wait for a gate before clearing security; go through, then watch the screens airside. What is worth checking on the board before you leave your hotel is your terminal, because International and Domestic are separate buildings and a driver who drops you at the wrong one costs you the walk.

If your departure is showing a delay, the check-in deadline usually moves with it — but not always, and not for every airline. Treat a delayed departure as a reason to arrive on the original schedule rather than the new one until the airline confirms otherwise.

If your flight is delayed or cancelled at HKT

Deal with the airline, not the airport: each carrier staffs its own counter in the departures hall, and that counter is where rebooking, meal vouchers and hotel arrangements are handled. Phone queues during a disruption are long, and at a single-airport island destination the desk in front of you is usually faster.

Stay landside-aware if you have not checked in yet, and keep watching the board — at Phuket a delay is often caused by the inbound aircraft running late, which means the departure time can improve as well as slip.

A disruption also breaks whatever you arranged on the ground. A private transfer booked against your flight number is normally re-timed at no charge; a fixed-time taxi or a Smart Bus plan is not. Which direction you are travelling decides how bad that is: buses leave the airport until 23:30, so a delayed arrival usually still catches one, but the last bus towards the airport leaves Rawai at 19:30 and Patong at about 20:20 — so if your outbound flight slips into the evening, a ฿100 trip becomes a metered-taxi one. Meeting someone off a flight at Phuket Airport

Arrivals for international flights come out into the arrivals hall on the ground floor of the International Terminal; domestic arrivals come out in the domestic building next door. Check which one your flight uses before you set off, because the two exits are a covered walk apart and phone reception in the hall is busy at peak times.

Time your own journey against the estimated arrival plus the 20 to 40 minute buffer described above, not against the scheduled time. Coming from Patong or the southern beaches that means leaving roughly an hour and a half before the estimate — the same drive times we publish on our route pages apply in this direction.

Waiting is comfortable enough: the arrivals area has cafés, ATMs, currency exchange and the transport desks, so it is a reasonable place to sit out a delay rather than circling in a car park.
