From HKT to Krabi

Krabi — with its beach towns Ao Nang and Railay — sits on the mainland east of Phuket, about 165 km by road, roughly 2.5–3 hours away. Many travellers fly into Phuket (HKT) for its wider choice of international flights and transfer on from there. Krabi has its own airport too, but from Phuket there is no Smart Bus; the choices are a shared minivan at around 400–600 baht per person, a private car or van at roughly 2,500–3,500 baht, the seasonal Phuket–Krabi ferry, or a public bus.

Getting from Phuket Airport to Krabi

Krabi is a separate province on the Andaman coast east of Phuket. The road route leaves the island over the Sarasin Bridge and follows Highway 4 through Phang Nga, so allow about 2.5–3 hours by private car or van, longer in a shared minivan that picks up and drops other passengers. There is no Phuket Smart Bus across provinces.

Most visitors heading to Ao Nang or Railay pre-book a private van or transfer so a driver meets them in arrivals and takes them straight through — the least stressful option after an international flight. A shared join-in minivan is the budget alternative at a few hundred baht per person, but it is slower and stops along the way.

Van, ferry or bus?

A private van is the fastest and simplest, especially for families or groups splitting the fare. The Phuket–Krabi ferry from Rassada Pier is scenic and runs mainly in the high season (roughly October–April), but you still need a taxi to the pier and a transfer at the other end, so the total time is longer. Public buses from Phuket Bus Terminal 2 are the cheapest but involve changes and are impractical with luggage. Grab and Bolt do not reliably cover this cross-province distance.

Local tips for Krabi, Ao Nang & Railay

Ao Nang is the main beach and hotel hub and the base for island-hopping tours to the Four Islands, Hong Islands and Phi Phi. Railay — famous for its limestone cliffs and rock climbing — has no road access at all and is reached by longtail boat from Ao Nang or Krabi Town. Because the transfer is long and taxis are scarce once you arrive, book your airport transfer and any island tours in advance, and confirm whether your driver is going to Ao Nang, Krabi Town or a pier.

Phuket Airport to Krabi — FAQ

How far is Krabi from Phuket Airport?
About 165 km by road, roughly 2.5–3 hours to Ao Nang or Krabi Town via the Sarasin Bridge and Highway 4.
How much is a transfer from Phuket Airport to Krabi?
A private car or van is about 2,500–3,500 baht; a shared join-in minivan is around 400–600 baht per person. The ferry is roughly 650–1,000 baht plus pier transfers.
Is there a bus or Smart Bus to Krabi?
No Smart Bus — it is an island service. Public buses run from Phuket Bus Terminal 2 to Krabi with changes and take four hours or more, so most visitors take a van or transfer.
Can I take a ferry from Phuket to Krabi?
Yes, mainly in the high season (about October–April) from Rassada Pier. It is scenic but slower overall once you add the taxi to the pier and the transfer at the Krabi end.
Should I book my Krabi transfer in advance?
Yes. It is a long cross-province trip with few taxis waiting at the other end, so a pre-booked private transfer with a fixed price and a driver in arrivals is well worth it.
